Surgical Dermatology

We are proud to offer the only State-Licensed and Medicare-Certified Surgery Center in Kentucky devoted to Dermatologic care.

About Our Surgery Center

The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) at Dermatology Associates of Kentucky is an outpatient surgery center where patients are treated for skin cancer. Our ASC is state licensed, accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), and is equipped to provide patients with the best treatment available, in a safe and comfortable setting.

There are several methods of treating skin cancer, and the method chosen depends on several factors, such as the location of the cancer, its size, and previous therapies. One of the most effective methods for treating skin cancer is Mohs micrographic surgery.

Mohs is a precise surgical technique, performed in our onsite surgical suite, in which thin layers of cancerous tissue are removed and examined until only cancer-free tissue remains. Mohs is done in stages, and the lab work is performed immediately, on-site, in our licensed and accredited medical lab. This method ensures the cancer has been completely removed, usually same day, rather than sending the tissue sample to an offsite lab for results days later.

All surgeries performed in our ASC are entirely under local anesthesia, avoiding the traditional costs and risks associated with general anesthesia, intravenous sedation, and hospitalization. Because Mohs surgery is so precise, the amount of tissue removed is minimized, resulting in a smaller wound which heals more quickly and results in less scarring.

Mohs surgery requires advanced training in dermatologic surgery and pathology. Our Mohs surgeon, Dr. Sean Marzolf is board-certified in Dermatology, and completed a fellowship in Mohs Surgery and Procedural Dermatology. Dr. Marzolf is a member of the American College of Mohs Surgery, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the American Academy of Dermatology. Our other Mohs surgeon, Dr. Maheera Farsi is dual board-certified in Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology. Dr. Farsi is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American College of Mohs Surgeons, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Insurance

Mohs surgery is covered by many insurance plans, including Medicare. However, the patient still may be responsible for co-pays and deductibles. Therefore, it is important that you review your individual insurance policy to determine your deductible, co-pay and co-insurance for outpatient surgery in an ambulatory surgery center. Our billing staff is also available to assist patients with determining out-of-pocket expenses. To verify our participation with a particular insurance plan or to determine estimated out-of-pocket expenses, please contact our billing department at (859) 263-4444.
