Skin tags tend to occur in areas subjected to friction,
such as the neck and under the arms and breasts. They are often
incorrectly referred to as “moles.” Although they can
be troublesome and unsightly, skin tags are entirely benign.
In recent years, insurance companies have stopped
paying for the removal of skin tags. Removal is usually termed a
“medically unnecessary” or “non-covered”
procedure. Therefore, removal of skin tags is considered a cosmetic
procedure. We are happy to remove these for you, but your insurance
will not pay for this service.
Removal can be performed using “liquid nitrogen
cryotherapy” (freezing) or “snip excision” (delicate
scissors after achieving local anesthesia). The cost for either
procedure is $150 for 10 lesions or less, plus $100 for each additional
10 lesions. With cryotherapy, the tags are injured and fall off
after several days.
If tissue is removed with scissors, we are obligated
to submit this tissue to a pathologist for evaluation under the
microscope. Therefore, you may receive another bill from the pathologist
(about $60) if this is not paid by your insurance. Payment is due
at the time of the procedure. All of our physicians can assist you
with skin tags.
