This is an exciting time for cosmetic surgery. The
field has undergone a true renaissance in recent years, as technical
advances have made cosmetic surgery safer, more effective, and easier
to afford than ever before.
Many patients are surprised to learn that surgical
enhancement of the skin has been practiced since ancient times.
The quest for an improved appearance is by no means a modern pursuit.
Primitive societies practiced tattooing, and the ancient Egyptians
left records reflecting a culture no less interested in beauty than
our own. Egyptian physicians used sulfur and resorcinol paste for
exfoliation, and the Edwin Smith Papyrus (1700 BC) contains prescriptions
for rejuvenating skin, as well as extensive descriptions of cosmetic
surgery. The ancient cultures of India, China, and Greece also contributed
significantly to early cosmetic surgery.
The modern era of cosmetic surgery began in the late
1800’s, with the development of chemical peeling techniques
by a German dermatologist. Since those early days, dermatologists
have consistently been at the forefront of new advances and techniques
in cosmetic surgery. Dermatologic surgeons were the first physicians
to perform dermabrasion, hair restoration surgery, laser surgery,
medium-depth chemical peeling, collagen injections, leg vein treatment
with sclerotherapy, and most recently, Botox injections.
Tumescent liposuction was developed in 1986 by a dermatologic
surgeon to allow safe and effective fat removal and body contouring
under local anesthesia alone. Previously, plastic surgeons had performed
"dry" liposuction under general anesthesia - a risky procedure
that required frequent hospital admissions and blood transfusions.
The superiority of the tumescent technique has led to its adoption
by the vast majority of plastic surgeons and dermatologists practicing
the technique today.
