Derived from fresh fruits, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
are natural substances that help your skin fight aging. Commonly
used AHAs include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid. Of
these, glycolic acid, which is derived from sugar cane, is the most
popular. Glycolic acid is a stable, colorless, odorless, non-toxic
substance.
How can glycolic acid
help me?
With regular use, glycolic acid products promote smoother, healthier
skin with more even tone. Fine lines and splotchy pigmentation are
improved.
How do glycolic acids
work?
AHAs restore many of the skin's biologic functions to a younger,
healthier state. For example, glycolic acid enhances "desquamation,"
or exfoliation, of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. This
leads to smoother, less scaly skin. In addition, the overall thickness
of the skin is slightly increased due to increased production of
"glycosaminoglycans." These natural, jelly-like substances
are partially responsible for the soft, flexible tone of youthful
skin. Unfortunately, natural glycosaminoglycan production decreases
in adulthood, leading to wrinkling and poorer skin tone.
Are all glycolic acid
products created equal?
Studies suggest that glycolic acid concentrations of 10-20% are
needed to achieve significant improvement. By law, over-the-counter
formulations contain less than 10% glycolic acid (usually 0-8%).
Therefore, non-prescription formulations may not achieve the desired
results.
What types of glycolic
acid products do you recommend?
We carry the MD Forte line of glycolic products in concentrations
of 15%, 20%, and 30%. We have chosen this line because of its effectiveness,
elegance, and the excellent reputation of its manufacturer (Allergan
– the makers of Botox and numerous other well-regarded prescription
medications). Other good brands of glycolic acid products include
Neo Strata, which was founded by the scientists who first highlighted
the beneficial effects of AHAs, and Glyderm.
What are the drawbacks
to glycolic acid?
Most patients experience mild stinging for a few seconds after applying
glycolic acid. Also, several months of use may be needed to achieve
the maximum benefit. Some patients with particularly sensitive skin,
such as those with rosacea, may not be able to tolerate glycolic
acid products. These products are considered cosmetic and are therefore
not covered by your insurance company.
How can I purchase MD
Forte?
We recommend a consultation with Drs. Massa or Webb prior to beginning
an AHA regimen. They will help you choose an anti-aging regimen
that is ideally suited for your skin. Maximum benefit can often
be achieved by combining glycolic acid with a prescription retinoid,
such as Renova.
